#01 – Ring
She fought to hold back her tears as she stared disbelievingly into the tissue-laden box, but she was unable to hide her shock completely – she hadn’t told anyone about the ring, nor how many countless hours she’d spent staring at it longingly from behind the glass at Tiffany’s…so how did he know it was exactly what she wanted for Christmas?
#02 – Hero
In her eyes, his was a life chock full of heroic moments, but her favorite was probably one of his first: the day he stood up to Dr. Dude on her behalf, very cool in his dressing down of the rival band leader for giving her nine-year-old self cigarettes and the encouragement to “be cool.”
#03 – Memory
Until the day she died, she would always cherish the memory of sitting next to him in that cramped little practice room, listening to the song he’d written – for her, about her, inspired by her – its haunting refrain reverberating deep in her soul even after his hands slipped from the piano keys.
#04 – Box
She remembered stumbling upon Renee’s “boyfriend box” – filled with discarded mementos of relationships long since soured – and she remembered fervently hoping she’d never have to make one of her own.
#05 – Run
One of the things she admired most about him was the way he never ran away from his problems, always standing up for what he believed in, no matter how principled (censoring students’ first amendment rights at school) or dorky (insisting on “finishing this chapter” instead of helping the others tear down a set at the P*lace).
#06 – Hurricane
“I haven’t seen a storm like this since Hurricane Allen,” he remarked casually, to which she could only turn sharply towards him, suddenly realizing that, though it felt like she’d known him forever, in fact she knew little of his past prior to his family’s move to New York.
#07 – Wings
He’d always disregarded the old chestnut about gaining roots and wings…until he met her, and then it all made sense: his family and his heritage gave him roots, no matter that they never seemed to settle in one place for long; he truly understood what it meant to soar when he fell in love with her, so deeply and so completely.
#08 – Cold
“Are you cold?” he murmurs, sliding his arm around her shivering shoulders and drawing her deeper into the welcome warmth of his body.
#09 – Red
He never liked the color red – until it became a prominent addition to her stylish wardrobe.
#10 – Drink
She tended to be a little flighty, but she was always considerate; he had no idea how many free drinks he’d scored simply by hanging out with her after school, though it seemed she was perpetually broke because she was always treating her friends as well as herself.
#11 – Midnight
She would never forget their first kiss, impulsive and heart-stopping and over far too soon, shared in the heady darkness of midnight on New Year’s Eve.
#12 – Temptation
She was not the first time he’d known temptation – but she was the first time he’d been willing to give in to it.
#13 – View
Riley shrugged as Ryan searched his features for reassurance, the soda jerk adding noncommittally, “From where I’m sitting, you have it pretty good; if you want my advice, all I can say is – try not to screw this one up, eh?”
#14 – Music
Music was their universal, the common element that bound them together to begin with – and kept them together through it all: the smiles, the tears, the laughter, and the grief.
#15 – Silk
She felt very grown up in her first silk dress, a gorgeous deep crimson with dainty lace detailing – and felt even more grown up when she wore it on her first date with the boy she’d had a crush on for years.
#16 – Cover
At the end of the impromptu performance, those onstage barely able to rein in their own amusement, he found he couldn’t keep himself from laughing, his face red and tears streaming down his cheeks as he sputtered, “So this is what it’s like to have your material covered!”
#17 – Promise
“Promise me we’ll always be friends,” she whispers fearfully, wrapping her arms around his neck and pressing into his side, “and that – no matter what – this won’t change anything between us.”
#18 – Dream
“I enjoy dreaming about you,” he admitted boldly, enjoying the rush of heat that burnished her skin at this cheeky confession, “when I can’t hold you at night.”
#19 – Candle
Her hair seemed to glow in the candlelight, sleek and shiny, cascading like molten gold over her shoulders.
#20 – Talent
His innate musical talent would carry him far, she knew…even if she feared it would ultimately carry him right out of her life.
#21 – Silence
A strained, awkward silence fell over them, making him want to take back every impulsive, heated word of their fierce argument as tears pooled in her eyes.
#22 – Journey
“The destination might be the ultimate goal,” he advised, his eyes sparkling as he slipped his hand in hers, “but half the fun is in getting there.”
#23 – Fire
She never grasped the innuendo of the lyric c’mon baby light my fire until the band was performing the number onstage during a tribute series – and he directed the line straight at her.
#24 – Strength
She could always count on his strength to steady her, even in the rockiest of times, be it in the form of a lingering embrace, a few kind words, or even the reassurance of a single, solitary flower in bloom.
#25 – Mask
Whatever mask she felt forced to don that morning in order to face the world immediately fell in his presence, which only made him love her more.
#26 – Ice
His temper was glacial: slow to heat, quick to burn, and washed away in a raging torrent of disappointment.
#27 – Fall
To think back on it now, after all these years had passed, she realized she had probably fallen for him the first time she’d seen him – he wasn’t classically handsome, but his features were striking; even beyond that, he was fearless – a quality she would come to admire even more as they grew up.
#28 – Forgotten
“You know I don’t like surprises,” he groused, feeling petulant right up until the point where she uncovered his eyes – and then, he could only stare at this most unexpected gift in total surprise, any lingering anger or annoyance over being tricked long forgotten.
#29 – Dance
“How is it possible,” she laughed, ignoring the pain as he stepped on her foot for the seventh time in five minutes, “for a musician to have rhythm but absolutely no coordination?”
#30 – Body
He enjoyed the way she shyly explored his body as they lay idly alone on the beach, the others having long abandoned the sandy shores for the glittering lights of the boardwalk as darkness fell.
#31 – Sacred
Sometimes she wondered if he held anything in higher regard than his precious personal library – and where she might rank on a list of Most Important, if he ever cared to keep tally of his life like she did.
#32 – Farewells
“This isn’t good-bye,” she whispered fiercely – even though they both knew it was.
#33 – World
Goodness knows, he’d had his share of pretty female companions, but no one in his world – or, truly, in the entire universe, it must be known – quite compared to her.
#34 – Formal
Stacy quickly learned the same lesson that all the other women in his life – up to and including his mother – had learned the hard way: while you could wrestle Ryan into just about any set of clothing, even formalwear, you would only pry his Chucks from his cold, dead hands.
#35 – Fever
“You aren’t allowed to get sick,” she chided gently, sitting next to him on his sickbed and brushing a cool hand across his fevered brow, “after all – what would we do without you?”
#36 – Laugh
She loved to laugh, even if she didn’t often have the occasion; he loved to listen to her laugh, because it meant she was truly enjoying herself – and he wanted nothing more than for her to be happy.
#37 – Lies
“It’s not true!” Stacy screams, struggling against her sister’s hold, “The way he feels about me isn’t a lie, and it never was!”
#38 – Forever
“It might not be forever,” he vowed, caressing her cheek softly, “but I promise you – I’ll make it good, however long it lasts.”
#39 – Overwhelmed
She couldn’t help but feel completely overwhelmed by everything that was suddenly happening to her: the band’s newfound popularity; her newfound popularity as their leader and main attraction; her friends’ hints and nudges and pleas for the truth…and her boyfriend’s deepening desire to spend more alone time with her.
#40 – Whisper
She shivered with delight to feel the whisper of his touch across her bare skin, his hands dipping ever lower to explore uncharted territory.
#41 – Wait
“I’m – I’m not going to ask you to wait for me,” she informed him in a rush, stunning him into silence.
#42 – Talk
“Talk is cheap,” she teases him, her eyes glittering as she draws his mouth close to hers, “and actions speak louder than words.”
#43 – Search
His eyes frantically searched hers for any indication that she understood what he was saying – or trying to say – as those three little words tumbled from his lips.
#44 – Hope
He couldn’t bear to see the hope that glimmered in her eyes – especially when he knew his answer would only break her heart.
#45 – Eclipse
All it took was one look into his eyes for her to realize, even after three months of separation, that love truly eclipsed all doubt.
#46 – Gravity
“I don’t think you realize the gravity of the situation,” Renee said, her eyes narrowing as she eyed Ryan, while simultaneously grinding her fist in her palm, “so let me make it crystal clear for you: you hurt my sister, and you answer to me.”
#47 – Highway
He offered to teach her how to drive, expertly winding his way through their dense Brooklyn neighborhood to a quiet stretch of highway, but quickly realized his mistake when he found himself hanging onto the door handle for dear life as she careened, carefree, down the open road.
#48 – Unknown
“I don’t know what my future holds,” he admitted, exhaling sharply and tightening his grip on her hand as they descended from the risers in the middle of the audience, “but I’m glad you’re along for the ride.”
#49 – Lock
As their red-rimmed eyes locked, she drew a deep breath, pushing the words past the lump in her throat, past her quivering lips, past her fear and doubt and insecurity: “Don’t say it’s over – not like this.”
#50 – Breathe
“Breathe,” he whispered against the shell of her ear, his arms closing around her waist, his hands gliding up the bare planes of her back, “just breathe.”
